Ideally you should try and find proper chicken feed, as it contains all the correct amount of nutrients for healthy birds, and in the case of laying hens, the proper needed protien for egg production.
If your really stuck, you can feed them food scraps from your kitchen, broccoli, left over salad (no salad dressing) etc... Grind up dry corn kernals, oatmeal flakes, cat food kibbles, bread crusts, unsalted sunflower seeds, any whole grain cereals, granola (without the raisens), yogurt, sour cream. Garden greens, and some weeds, (some are toxic), grass leaves, etc.. Ask your neighbors for scraps, but let them know what is ok, and what is not. Local grocery stores often throw out wilted lettuce, cabbage leaves, bruised apples, and banana's, etc. that you might be able to use as well.
