The weather is getting nice and the chickens are wanting out to free range...The problem I have is they just never stay home...They like to visit my neighbor(the ones that don't like animals) 300feet away or wander too close to the road...Their coop and secure run is about 150 feet away from the road and we have 5 acres but that is just not where they want to be

We would really like to fence in part of the yard with some fencing and T posts...Now my question is would 48 inch high keep the chickens in the yard and what kind of fencing material would you use? We are probably going to need at least 300 feet of fencing so the least expensive the better.

Thanks everyone!

I think I would go some higher than that. Our fencing is chicken wire and it works fine. I'm sure others use different kinds, maybe someone will chime in and give you some other ideas.

It depends on the breeds of chickens you have. I have a 5 feet tall fence that my leghorn and hamburgs can easily fly over. My red stars can almost make it,but not quite. My heavy breed hens cant fly no more than a foot off the ground. I've trimmed the leghorns and hamburgs feathers on their wings and have had no more escapes.

I have LF Brahams that I am trying to keep in...I was hoping that a 48 inch high fence would do the job...I just want a place for them to enjoy while I am at home with them...They have a safe, secure attached run to enjoy when I am not able to keep an eye on them...I just spent most of the day today rounding them up and bringing them back home...I would hate to see one of them get hit on the road...

I apprecate your help!
