Need some hatching buddies - Hatching May 24-28

11 chicks all together out of 14 that went into lock down. I just had to toss two that had been gone for a while. I just had a feeling to go ahead and open the end to check things out. Now, I know, what a bad egg smells like.

The second one had been gone for quite a while! Whew!! Here's a couple of pictures of my babies..not sure how to put them together, I'm just glad I can post them!

Two babies are still in bator drying off a bit more. One of them is the baby that I helped out..it is doing great! Trying to stand up on it's own, legs and feet look great..glad I helped it. Here's another pic of my ones that are dry or almost dry.

Well, I am extremely disappointed. I had to intervene again...although this time I don't think it's going to work out. I had a delaware egg pip early this morning (lets say 23 hours ago)...it pushed it's beak out, but that was all...it sat there for a long time and I noticed it had begun frothing (sp?) at the mouth. I figured something was wrong, and since no other egg was pipped, I pulled the egg out and proceeded to remove the shell only. Yep...it was shrink wrapped....which I CANNOT understand. I did open the incubator a couple of times, but when I did, there were no pipped eggs. Can they shrink wrap even before they pip? My understanding was that they couldn't.

Anyway, I am holding out hope for this little one, but I don't believe it's going to make it. Maybe I just need to increase my humidity????? It has been running almost 70% (assuming the hygrometer is still 11% off).

I will be completely bummed if none of my delaware eggs hatch! I started with 24 (of course the USPS didn't help by getting them here in three days rather than two). I will be getting another dozen sent on Monday and I do have 18 del chicks already.

In ten hours I have gotten 5 pips, I do have to open my incubator so that I can put water in and to turn three eggs but the humidity only drop for a few minutes each time.

I have 2 blue silkies, out of 6 set.
3 blue wyandottes, out of 12 set.

One wyandotte is dry but I helped and it is looking good. I'm not happy with the money spent on the foam cooler type incubator. The heat element is low enough that they are burning themselves once out, so you have to open it up to remove them immediately which caused the one to dry out. And I saw the temp spike to 110 degrees. The plan was to get broody hens for the next hatch but husband suggested the fancy cabinet incubator. Yay!

Ok...I got the pictures uploaded but have a lot of things to do so will not try to paste right now. Did get 13 out of 15 of my BBS hatched this time!! Happy ! Cynthia the chicks look adorable...it has been fun sharing with you all. Anyone starting a new hatch next week?? I'm getting new BBS Jersey Giant eggs next Wed and plan to put in the incubator on Thursday. Lets do a May Hatch out group??
