Need some hatching buddies - Hatching May 24-28

what a great setup. maybe next year this can be a project for the man.

I just set 11 BBS Orpingtons, 5 'green' egg BBS Orpingtons and the ones from my friend's sister (sent 1 dozen, 4 broken): 1 'Aracauna' (pby EE), 1 Sex Link, 3 Light Brahma and 3 BCM for a total of 24 eggs. Yay, everything fits exactly. Must have been meant to be!

I made one out of an old Coleman cooler, computer fan, HW theromostat, porch light, picture glass and misc scavanged items. Cost was about $18. Incubating in cartons propped up in the center on a beam to tilt them so I can 'turn' the entire carton by rotating it across the center beam. Not sure if it will work, but I didn't want to hand turn that many eggs. It's a work in progress.

You know, I am getting kinda pumped about this thread! We have quite a few people that have joined us for this hatch and it not only includes chickens, but also ducks and turkeys! Nice!

I added the mirror in the back of the incubator because I couldn't tell in my first hatch if the eggs had pipped on the opposite side of the eggs. I decided that adding it should increase my visibility.

All these eggs are shipped and 36 of them took three days to ship unfortunately. I am figuring my hatch rate will be 50-60% at best...so that will leave me with around 27-33. Half will be roosters, so most of them will end up on the dinner plate

I also have 25 chicks beling delivered next week....so if all goes well I am looking at almost 60 chicks. I'll end up keeping between 25 and 30 (including 4-5 roosters). When I get into something....I tend to go all in

Yeah, I am glad I have some hatching buddies as well now! I got involved in a thread during my test incubation and it is pretty cool to be able to hear about everyone else's progress and pass on your own. It seems like most people around me don't care as much about chickens as BYC'ers do.....wonder why?

Hubby's line in the sand for the hatching is no roosters get to stay. Its going to be tricky because my daughter (10) is a vegetarian. She is ok with us selling/giving away cocks to 'a good home' which she knows may include finger-lickin' good homes, but I know she would not be able to handle dad and bro eating ones she personally knew. Just my luck I'll probably hatch out all roos.

I'm in- a friend and I shared a bator, and set at school We had a great hatch last year so fingers crossed- our students love it!!Set 12 Barred Rock, 12 EE, 4 Blue Crested Araucana, 4 Olive Eggers, 4 Polish, 2 BSL/Orp Mutt, 7 Orpington, 1 Silky and 5 Silky crosses. To add to the excitement, I set them in a still air with 42 egg turner:/ And... one of the BC Araucana had a hairline from USPS, so I taped it. Will candle next week. Set 11 on 4-7, the rest on 4-8. Temps/humidity were stabalizing well when I left late Friday. Hoping for 4-28/29 hatchings!!
