Need some hatching buddies - Hatching May 24-28

The students are excited about so many people doing it at the same time. We will candle on Thursday, one week, to see if any are showing veins, then probably on Monday after that to see what needs to be removed. When we hatch in class we candle several times to see the development. When I can get my hands on one we use a slide projector because it's so bright you can see a lot more going on in the egg.

I set my eggs on Thursday and Friday (yes I know, I wasn't happy doing that....but usps didn't get my second set to me as quick as I had hoped). I will be candling on Thursday night most likely. I am heading out of town this weekend, so they will be on their own for a few days. I may take a look at them again on Monday, depending on how things go Thursday.

This is only my second hatch, but I candled several times the during the first hatch and I hatched 15/16. I would say that if you are getting them back in the incubator fairly quickly and you aren't rough on them, you should be fine to candle them several times.

Thanks for the input....I may go ahead and do day 5 instead of 10 because I never got to see the veining on my first batch early on....I"d like to see it and from my viewpoint...by day 10 I could see a black blob with a air cell.....no veining.

I am so excited. This is my first time. I can't wait to see if they are growing!!!

As I have said a few times, I test hatched 16 mixed eggs to see if I knew what I was doing about a month ago. I had no money in the eggs and knew I wasn't going to keep them, so I wasn't too worried. This time I spent too much money on eggs

so I am rather nervous/hopeful about this hatch. I also don't know what to expect since this is the first time I have used shipped eggs! I am right there with ya!

Well, my future chicks just had some friends arrive in the mail today. I got 25 chicks from Paul Harter in Missouri. 18 Delaware, 4 Partridge Rock, and 3 New Hampshire

I have 4 different thermometers in the incubator (front, back, right and middle-ish). I have been taking frequent data and it appears that I may have a cooler spot on the right side. The back and middle thermos have been cycling between 99 and 100 but on the very right it reads about a degree cooler. I have an infrared thermo and when I sampled the shell egg temperatures the ones on the right were about 97-98 where the ones in the center were 99-99.5.

I think some of it is my novice design since I made my own incubator. I have ventilation/access holes for tubing on the right and my fan is on the top left so I think it may be drawing room temp air in and the air is not getting warmed prior to crossing the eggs. I have blocked the vent holes a bit, but I think its too late to redisign with 24 eggs in there now.

I think my best bet is rotating the cartons the eggs are in end to end daily to try to mitigate the temp differential. Maybe I should have cut the 12 count cartons in half so I would have 4 cartons of 6 (I thought they might be too flimsy). That way I could move the more interior eggs to the outside and visa versa easily. Is it too late to do that now? Has anyone else set in cartons that were a 6 pack instead of 12 pack?
