Need some hatching buddies - Hatching May 24-28

Writerofwords: your students are lucky to have this experience!

At our house, we're waiting for 5 Black Copper Maran eggs under our broody hen to hatch tomorrow or Saturday. One chick hatched on Monday -- I think the egg must have been incubating when I got it. We moved the chick into a brooder indoors and the plan is to slip it under the hen after the other ones hatch. Some photos are here:http://jensenschickens.blogspot.com/ and I'll post more photos after the rest hatch.

Well this early morning (3:45AM) I have two chicks hatched (so cute) but the one that is at the wrong end had no progress and was quiet. I decided to take it out and try to help even though i had some pips going...no zips. So I got the egg quickly out and with tweazers took off a piece of the shell. It started bleeding...profusely! Sigh. I put a piece of tissue over it and misted with water and put it back.
The good news is that my humidity only went down a tad and was back up within a minute so it should not have harmed the rest. I don't see how the little guy will make it....time will tell.
I have 2 out and 8 pips...two questionable eggs, the backward egg and two that should hatch but haven't pipped. Day 22.

Same for me, three pips..one being since early this morning. I can see the little beak moving around in there. If it doesn't hatch tonight, may have to see what's up by noon. Hopefully I'll hear that desperate "where are you mom" peeping later tonight.

Well one is out (black orpington either pure or mixed can't tell yet) and more are zipping I think one that is zipping looks like a lighter color Sussex anyway I will go take a picture real fast.

The Barnevelder hatched during the night. My 4 delaware eggs are on day 21 today and the first one pipped this morning. I do have 1 Dominique egg remaining on day 22, but I have seen no pipping...beginning to lose hope for it).

I have two that have five toes...no feathers on them. Clean legged. Then, it's third brother, or sister, has 4 toes, with the feathers. Mom is an Australorp, dad was a Silky. Can't tell how the feathering is going to look on them. Very black in color.

Yes, 6 on each foot. Funny looking guy.

Nice link! How fun.

And now the stars out there are starting to notice that chickens are fun. I hadn't seen those pictures. I had heard of diapers for chickens, and when I mentioned them to my husband, I heard a very nervous chuckle. Uneasy to say the least. I laughed, and said, don't worry, just because I am getting into bantams doesn't mean I will bring them in. Another nervous chuckle.

Well, I have, four babies now. Woke up to two more. I had to help crack another eggs shell sideways for the chick..another one that pipped at the wrong end. At least now I can see it and watch it. I just cracked the shell, didn't tear the membrane, it had already done a bit of that. Hoping it will be strong enough to do the rest.

I have several more pips, and only two that haven't pipped. Today is day 21.

I have alot of progress this morning.

I hatched one of my mutt eggs this morning. It is black. So far all my chicks are dark colored. I have 7 more pips and one unzipping so I may come home to more babies. Hoping to get off early since it's Friday.

Okay.... I had a silkie that pipped at the wrong end. It was on day 22 and I don't know how long it had been pipped but it wasn't making any progress. I really don't think it could turn in the egg otherwise how could it breathe? So last night I chipped all the way around to unzip him. I pulled a little on the membrane and saw some blood so I moistened the membrane and put him back.

This morning he was the same and had made no progress so I decided to intervene. I got the bathroom steamed up from my shower and got a warm wet washcloth and went in there with the egg. I chipped away all of the shell first and then started working on the membrane. I saw a little blood but not bad. I think it may have been the blood from earlier that had pooled under the membrane a bit. I very slowly was able to remove the membrane which left a very thin clear membrane that I slowly wiped at with the warm cloth to remove.

Now.... maybe I should have waited but I dont think this guy was coming out by himself. He still has something stuck to his rear.... unabsorbed yolk? It is about dime sized and there is the stringy stuff attached. I left all of that alone and put him back in the incubator. I am hoping for the best but worried too. Maybe he will make it.

I have 2 other silkies that are on day 22. I candled them and the beak is not in the air sack. I didn't see movement and at the top just before the air cell one of them has what looks like pooled blood spots. I know they were alive just before lockdown. These two may not make it.

Congrats eveyone!

Glad the Barnevelder made it!

fife..I also saw blood when I took my little one that has pipped at the wrong end out..I can see it breathing though, so will give it some time today. We just have to worry about how the legs and feet will be when they do this for a long time.

It sounds like everyone is doing great! We had 28 out of the 30 hatch. The two that didn't hatch weren't really expected to. We started with 42 but had 11 that were not fertile and one blood ring after 8 days. So not a bad hatch at all!
