It's called 'The hen and the Hawk' by John Steuart Curry.

Here's the description:
'The hen is pictured in the supreme act of motherhood-defending her chicks from the fierce hawk. Though ill-equipped to fend off the attack, she shuts hers eyes, flaps her wings, and even manages to get her plump body off the ground-a wonderful portrayal of motherly love.'

Can't find it anywhere on google.

Your discription sounded like a very cool painting I would be interested in, so I spent 2 hours

looking through thousands of Mr. Curry's paintings.. quite a man he was...

Only to finally say to myself.... maybe I should change my searching a bit..

2 minutes and 3 seconds later..

Frans Snyder.. The Hawk and the Hen pops up..

In the book I was reading they said it was Steuart, but I might have read it wrong. But, thank you so much in taking the time to find it!

Here is one from Curry also:

You eye leads to the torando, but then you see the white chicken that looks peaceful in the gloom of the family running to ecaspe it. But you could also say the chicken is also alert, but most say the small hen is not scared because of the simpleness of the white chicken.

I think she is just trying to decide if she should get in the storm shelter with the dog or take her chances with the tornado. After all, she has heard that Oz is lovely this time of year.
