I need some help with ideas on how to build our run. Please, if you wouldn't mind sharing some photos of your run that would be helpful as well! Here are some photos of the space I have to work with...

is the shed/playhouse the coop? and do you still want youth to be able to use the slide?

If so I would build a run directly off the structure, with about 6 inches clearance between the slide and side of run. I would angle the roof off to the fence and make it as long as you can.

How many birds?

Thanks! Yes, that's the coop my daughter was playing in haha. I was thinking of taking the slide down just to maximize the space. We only have 4 birds.

I'm planning on building a hoop style run out of cattle panels this spring. Something like this: https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/cattle-panel-hoop-coop.74636/

If you're worried about predators you are going to want to cover it in hardware cloth instead of chicken wire and also create an underground apron of hardware cloth around the perimeter to prevent digging.

Lots of NICE shade in that area!! Great spot!

With only a small number of chickens, you don’t need to include the tree. The downside to including the tree is that predators can more easily access the chickens. I don’t know what kind of predators you would have, but the tree would be an access point.

When you build the run, you should put up roost bars about 2’ above the ground. They can easily hop on or off them. We put in roost bars between roof support posts, during a rough integration a couple years ago- the younger birds were being mercilessly harassed by the older ones (the hardest integration we had) and we needed someplace for the younger chickens to get out of the pecking range of the older birds. Plus, they love to take afternoon naps in the summer on the shady outdoor roosts.
