hello all, i am a new member and soon to be chicken owner, It started with my son wanting a pet chciken so i figured we might as well get some benefit out of it an get some eggs. I will be ordering 3 or 4 chickens all hens as i cannot have roosters where i live and was wondering what the best breed would be as far as egg production and temperment as my son will want to pick them up and play with them now and then. i have been doing some research and i think my best option so far is the barred plymouth rock but any suggestions would be appreciated. Secondly i am building my coop (i know its way to soon but i was excited i got an excuse to build something) and was wondering what my best option would be to put on the bottom level of my coop. i have read sand, hay, pine needles etc. and would like to know the best option. i will try to post some pics of my coop as i build it so i can get some input and ideas from some veterans. thanks for any advice.

! Pleased you joined us! In terms of breed - you will get almost as many answers as there are breeds. Barred Rocks are indeed a great breed, as are Speckled Sussex, Buff Orps, Easter Eggers, etc., etc., etc! With the coop, all those suggestions for the floor are great. I use hay as it is cheap and available to me. Goo luck to you!!
