Hello wonderful BYC'ers. I am about to be in the process of buying some Pea eggs from another member, but need to know a few things that I couldn't seem to find much about while scouring the Peafowl forum.

  1. I know the males scream, but at what age do they start?
  2. Do the hens scream as well?
  3. Are penned peas quieter than free-ranging ones, and how often do they call?
  4. For the quiet factor, would it be better to keep a pair of peas, or just a couple of female?
  5. With just a female, could she be penned with my male turkey, rooser, or other chickens?

I'm sure there are more questions, but these are the main ones I can think of. Thanks so much!

  1. I know the males scream, but at what age do they start? Usually year two when fertile, mostly during spring and summer

2. Do the hens scream as well? They honk, not call like the males

3. Are penned peas quieter than free-ranging ones, and how often do they call? Not really, and they call for a variety of reasons, often when startled.
4. For the quiet factor, would it be better to keep a pair of peas, or just a couple of female? A couple of females is quieter, but thats no fun.
5. With just a female, could she be penned with my male turkey, rooser, or other chickens? Could be, but many don't keep with chickens due to potential disease transfer to peafowl

I'm sure there are more questions, but these are the main ones I can think of. Thanks so much!

1. Same as above
2. Same as above
3. Answer: It's 1:35 am and my males are screaming inside the shed LMAO!! I can also hear a rooster crowing too! They yell during the day and at night.
4. If you do not want noise then do not get peas. The males scream during breeding season and when danger is near. It's not worth owning just a couple females when the males display so much nicer.
5. Why would you want to own a plain female? Your turkey will most likely attack her.
