I've never done this (gathering eggs and having to wait to put them all in the incubator) before. I have always just had somebody give me a dozen eggs, and then I hatched them in the classroom incubator (which I no longer have!).
I found somebody locally who will give me as many fertilized eggs as I want - but he's only getting four per day. I want to put 24 in a homemade incubator.
What I need are specific instructions to give him on how to store the fertilized eggs until he's gathered up 20 - 24 for me. I see that people are getting eggs shipped here and there to them, so I know that means the eggs aren't being shipped in heated boxes.........can he just pick up the eggs from the hens and set them in an egg carton on his kitchen counter in his heated (70 F) house for the week? Will this be okay? Should he put them in the fridge (that's too cold, right?)?
Also, the instructions I have for the incubator use a glass aquarium. For anybody who's hatched that way, is there anything in particular I need to know that you wish you'd known the first time around?
I want to do this w/ my 3rd child. We homeschool, and I did this w/ the two older kids while studying life science, and it was a great way to learn all the different concepts concretely. We already have the coop and know how to care for chicks and chickens, so I'm okay on that front (would use my own eggs but I only have two hens who have decided to lay only sporadically this winter.......bah!).
Thanks in advance - I learn so much here from just reading on the forums and the website itself!!!
