I live in a suburb that doesn't allow chickens, which I think is ridiculous. My plan was to get 3-4 small docile hens that would never be noticed and clip their wings to remain in the fenced yard but I'm afraid the egg song will give them away. Can anyone recommend a breed that doesn't have a song? I think I read that Brahma's have nothing or it is very quiet so any advice specific to them would be great. Ideally I wanted bantam cochins, but I think they are noisy layers. Thank you all. (And just for the record, I would love to hear the song. Maybe I should move.)

There are trends in individual birds, but I don't know if I would trust any breed's reputation completely to that effect. I do think "song" is a bit of a misnomer. Granted, I enjoy hearing it (it means eggs), but IMHO, there is nothing beautiful about bok, bok, bok, BWAUK!, bok, bok, bok, BWAUK!

Yes, you should move.....don't get chickens where they are not allowed, just makes it look bad for folks who are trying to keep them fairly.

All chickens will vocalize, the decibel level is impossible to predict and can change on a 'whim'.
