Hi!
We just got our first chicks about 1 1/2 weeks ago. So VERY new at this. We got 5 babies of different breeds.......1 buff orpington, 1 black sex link, 1 California white, 1 americauna and 1 silver-laced Wyandotte. Soooooo much fun! The Orpington, Wyandotte and americauna were all hatched on April 1st. The California and black sex link were 2 days older. We got them all on Friday the 3rd.

Anyway, everyone seems to be doing ok but the Wyandotte is not growing as fast as the others. All the others has doubled in size, getting big feet and lots of beautiful feathers. My little Wyandotte (Hennifer Lopez) seems ok but small and not as many feathers. I see her eat and drink. She seems active enough. I don't think there's any bullying, although there is a lot more activity all around.....flapping, running, jumping and some pecking at each other with no harm done.

Should I worry about this? Do wyandottes mature more slowly? She has always had a clean vent....no pasty butt! I've never noticed of felt a large crop. There was some diarrhea last week but stools seem ok now. They all eat medicated chick starter. We started adding a little grit this week and a few dried meal worms. We did electrolytes in water the first few days but now just fresh.

THoughts?

My first question would be - were all the chicks sold as large fowl? If your little one is bantam that would explain the difference in size, but not necessarily the feathering (though that can often be explained as well - as an example, a male often feathers in more slowly than a female and even with "sexed pullets" there is the risk of an oops rooster slipping through with the breeds you have selected.)

Were they shipped to you or a feed store? Some get more stressed in shipping (dehydrated) and take longer to recover. We have the same (now 3 weeks) and one was slow to get going. Now it is taking off, but smaller than the rest.

I believe they were all sold as large fowl.....so I don't think she's a bantam....

My niece brought them down from the Eggplant Urban Supply store she works at in the twin cities. They all seemed to handle the trip well.

Thanks for the heads up though......supposed to be a sexed pullet but there is a chance of ending up with a rooster.

They are on medicated feed.

Thanks for the input!.......keep it coming!

Not putting down any store but never trust the feed store kinda places in their signs of whats what, dont rule out a bantam just because the feed store had a different sign. All it takes is one kid that grabbed one to stick it back in a different pen lol.
