Hi there!

We built an elevated coop that is 36" off the ground. We've been using a ladder to access the coop but I'm hoping to find a convenient long-term solution that is not made from wood. Has anyone been able to purchase an exterior staircase or something like that? If so, where did you get it and how much was it approximately? Thanks for any help you can offer!

It sounds like this is for humans? I don’t think you’ll find many owners needing a stairway for their coops, they’d likely just use a simple wood staircase or cinder block.

They’re a lot of $ but you could try one of those metal staircases used on portable buildings, trailers, RVs, etc. I’d imagine one of those would last many years outdoors.

Why are you opposed to using a pressure treated wood ramp with cleats? It is very difficult for chickens to use ladders. If you don't want to use a ramp, you can build up steps out of cinder block as has been suggested or use stone.

We built a deck for our elevated walk-in coop. We elongated the deck to accommodate a wheelbarrow for clean out. The stairs are about 6 feet away from the coop door. It is made of wood, which is currently very expensive.

I think finding a metal staircase for a mobile classroom/office/etc would be best. Maybe a junkyard will have what you need.
Blocks could work, but they can shift, and may become unstable overtime.

Please clarify, is this ladder and the proposed staircase for you to get into the coop yourself or for the chickens to go in and out?

:)
Sorry that I wasn't clear! This is for humans to access the coop. We have a 12' x 12' coop that is split into 2 rooms. The first room is feed storage, exam counter, and supply room. The second room is for the chickens and they have a ramp to exit the coop. I'm specifically trying to find a solution for my Mom to access the coop easily (she can't climb the ladder).

Thanks for the tips! We have a cleanout door under the roosts that can be accessed easily from the ground on the West side and the wheelbarrow fits right under it. The human door is on the South side and we've been using a ladder but are looking for a long term solution that my Mom can easily navigate. I hadn't thought about mobile offices and things like that, I'll look into it!
