Need tips on telling Silkie Gender

Silkie roos can be commonly found in the corner of the coop hanging out
with interns.

Silkie pullets will commonly be singing show tunes while pacing back and forth.

Silkie roos have a razor sharp spike on the back of their head.

Silkie pullets have a razor sharp tongue.

Silkie roos will crow early but are experts at throwing their voices. The only
way to know for sure is to isolate them.

Silkie pullets aren't affected by microwaves on low. Give it a try.

Silkie roos float in 145 degree water, the pullets sink. This is my favorite method
of sexing them.

I noticed with our silkies that the males were much larger than the females from
as early as 1 week.

Well, if this is true, then I have ONE female (Hoppy) and the rest are boys....LOL...I'm still going to have to wait until I see/hear crowing I suppose - or show tunes, whichever comes first.

Thanks for your (as always) interesting perspective, Don!

I think it really depends on the breeds. We had the two blue silkies who
were the same size and the standard chicks until 5 weeks, or so. Our
splash pullet may have just been a runt but was tiny. Now we have a buff
silkie with our mix of chicks. It hatched at the same time as our Blue Orps and
is almost as big. It has the roo attitude already too. I wold my wife I'm
pretty sure it's a roo but she doesn't want to hear it. Cute little bugger.
He enjoys a good hot water bath followed by a microwave blow dry.
