We have tried everything Vitamins, hobbling, shoes, and even the displace achilles tendon thingy. They continue to be unable to get around and one is even struggling to eat and drink. I am so sad, but they are not growing, and I know they are barely hanging on. No one here has the heart to end there lives, but I think it is neccessary. Any suggestions??????

Well, here's what I've done. You put the little babies very gently into a paper lunch bag, and then just sit that bag in the freezer. Close the door, and go back later and they will be gone....They just go to sleep.

So sorry you have to go through that.

it is so pitiful. I got these chicks from my friend, who hatched them for me. She helped all of them out of the shell, which I would never do. I have 5 healthy chicks, which i should be thankful for, but I cannot help but wonder if they would have made it out on their own.

I've never had to do this myself, but I've read that putting them in the freezer is actually quite torturous, and I know you wouldn't want to cause your babies trauma. I'm not sure what the best way is- but I've heard of people putting some ether on a paper towel in a baggie. Place the chick in the bag, they inhale the fumes and off to sleep they go

Oh, that is so sad when they have problems.....I had to cull one recently that for some reason had only two toes on one foot, and couldn't get around......I feel your pain...

They always say not to help....I've helped a few times, but you're right....it's probably better to just let nature handle the hatching....

I think sometimes people just get so impatient. For me candling is really a blessing because I can actually see how things are going just before lockdown......I know it's harder with the dark eggs though......

Hang in there!

So sorry this is happening to you. I lost my first chick this year because of splayed leg. I tried everything but I think i just didnt catch it in time. It was hard because she kept eating but I decided to cull because she quit trying to stand up and hobbled around her cage instead. Its really hard not being able to fix the problem.

Sharp pruning shears is the fastest, very little blood. It's very quick and peaceful for the chick. Dig the hole first for burial, then do the deed, then you can lay them and bury them quickly. It's never easy.

sharp shears is the best answer......Had to do it myself two days ago. Not fun, but sometimes it has to be done to save the chicks from suffering.

Great advice, and accomplishes what to me is most important, doing it FAST. You will have the peace of knowing you did what was best, as humanely as possible.
