This just kills me to post this, but I do need the advise asap. Yesterday a hawk attacked my silkie roo, my son saw it happen & scared the hawk off & away. Both wings are broken on the roo, he can't hold his neck up & he flops around (like a fish out of water) every once in a while. I could not see any other injuries, other than the broken wings, but there seems to be internal injuries, he cannot see, nor swallow. I need to know how to put him down since he is in obvious pain. I cannot use a hand gun ( I live in an residential neighborhood ) but I do have an air gun, will that be sufficient? I do not know how to break a chicken's neck & fear that I might mess it up, but if someone can post on a sure obvious way of breaking the neck quickly, I will consider doing that. Thank you.

Ok, you might try cervical dislocation. Lay him on the ground and place a broomstick over his neck, close to his skull. Stand on either end of the broom stick - grab his legs and pull up. This will dislocate his neck and is a very humane way of dispatching an adult chicken. It should be fairly easy with a silkie since they're small.

You can also try an ax if you have one handy.

Good luck, and I'm very sorry

Crouch on the ground, hold his body firmly between you knees. Tell him you love him and you're sorry but you need to set him free. Then hold his neck firmly in your fist, and twist and pull firmly. There will be a crunching sound/feeling if you pulled enough. He'll spasm, but that's an automatic function. I usually hold on tight until all the spasms fade, which is a couple of minutes. And I keep talking calmly to them, telling them I want them to be free and not hurt any more.

If you have tree pruners you can use them to cut his neck. I do it from the back. This is my preferred method for butchering and it is quick. Even if they don't cut through the skin completely.....as long as you squeeze them completely shut, you will break his neck and he will die instantly. Be prepared for the spasms. He's already dead, its just a nerve reflex. Sorry you have to do this

Would it be acceptable to give an injured or dying bird a lethal dose of an off the self injection of some type of medication? Never had to put one down but if it is for an infectious disease would severing the head promote the infection?
Would an OD of Tylan 50 work quickly enough?
