I think that the bator and it's continual changing temp and humidity is one of the problems... I am actually shocked by the low quality of these bators. I guess you can get one that works better if you spend a lot more, but what's with the need to continually change the temp.
And Animal lover, I guess your home-made one wasn't much better.
One thing that I'll do next time is place the bator in a room with a constant temp... no night time drops that I have to monitor.
