…..ok, maybe not NEED but certainly WANT. I’m looking at options wondering what breeds to get. Spring is coming, eventually lol.

My goal is a rainbow egg basket (i am shallow with ADD and need the dopamine that multi colors provide when i open the nesting boxes). I am planning on ordering Bielferders and Copper Marans but in addition to this am not sure what else to round out my order.
I am wondering if people have pictures of CCL eggs compared to Whiting true blue and “Laced Blue Belle”. Are they really all that different from CCL eggs? My CCL and probably from what i’ve been getting lately, the EE girls all lay pale blue eggs and some of them almost look white. My OE’s have taken a break but were the most reliable through the cold dark winter from which we will hopefully escape soon.

I have CCLs, EE’s and OE’s already and don’t want too many of the same colored eggs (shallow i know, but this is the life i’m living).

Maybe I’m over-thinking the whole egg color thing but i have to obsess about something as there’s so much out of my control in general.

Suggestions and pictures of potential egg color are appreciated, especially so i can compare to what i’m already getting to help me choose.

I know that egg color can vary but i am having trouble picturing the egg color possibilities of the new girls based on descriptions alone. I am especially interested in the comparison between the blue egg layers as mentioned above, i understand the olive eggers will be a random crap shoot.

I know that the common hatchery chicks are not always bred to a good standard so i am looking for smaller farm options with tighter expectations and breeding standards.

I buy from Deer Run Farm in Maryland.

Browns are Welsummers
Greens are EEs
Blue is Ameracauna
Pink is Delaware

Do they ship? I am in wisconsin. I know hatching rates on shipped eggs are not as good as fresh eggs but since I’m limited anyway, its a way of keeping me in check lol.
Yes they ship. I'm in Wisconsin too. We got birds from there too. Nice birds, the standard breeds they have are bred to the Standard of Perfection. They ship both hatching eggs and chicks. I got the chicks.

I got hatching eggs twice last summer from Deer Run, I have to say they packaged them VERY well but they went USPS next day and I swear the Postal Service SCRAMBLED them. They had detached air sacs, they were all dark speckled Welsummers and I couldn’t really see the yoke when candling. ONE was assisted hatch and lived a day, none of the rest hatched (2 dozen total). I TOTALLY think this was the USPS fault, NOT Deer Run. I bravely opened the eggs after 23 days and all were scrambled with no signs of ever starting. SO, Sept 2025 I ordered 10 chicks- All arrived safely, plus an extra, and have now reached POL in the last 2 weeks- eggs are mostly still small, but very fun with all the speckles. I’d recommend checking them out!

I have prairie blue bell Eggers that lay the most beautiful blue eggs, I also have Americanas (yes I know, not a true breed) but I get many shades of blue and a few of green.

Also my Americana’s are super sweet and friendly, definitely a breed I would get again

Maybe some olive eggers for olive green eggs?

Nothing wrong with caring about egg color even though it impacts nothing, I very much care too lol :D
