OHMYGOD... That is PATHETIC! We bought our small farm from a farmer who had grown hay in this really fertile patch out the back of the house, it produces 40 large square bales, which helps us out since we still have to find hay. The nifty thing though, is that half our front paddock is almost pure alfalfa, so we're going to cut it down with the scythe and bring it in for drying. That's right WE'RE OLD FASHIONED, can't afford, nor do we have the land for a combine or anything, so we're using a SCYTHE aha.

Have to advertise, looking for hay, ugh.

I understand, neighbors do the dangest things. The house next to me had a bunch of overgrown trees. When the new owner came in he trimmed some and cut down others including the twenty year old beautiful cherry and Japanese maple. He chipped them and left the cottonwood!!! Did he not know that people would pay to take them off his hands? It's so annoying. The cherry was gorgeous. It's such a waste whether it's trees or hay. It's a shame but people just don't realize what they have.

WOW!! I am sorry!!! I come from a family that can get pretty mad at people. So that is just me. Sure, I convent them a little. We have 9 or 10 acres of woods and pasture for our 4 horses, and that isn't nearly enough. I convent alot, I shouldn't, but I do. I covent that although my family works super hard, we live in a 1970's single wide. It is nice, but there is certainly better. Our horses have a carport as one of their shelters. Our garage was our coop last year. Sorry, I just don't think everything is fair, life is far from fair. Yet thay have a $50,000 barn with just 4 goats, and my 13 goats and 2 sheep and 5 of my chickens live in a barn worth maybe $1500. Why am I not real fond of these people? They have NEVER made any move to get to know us. We may eventually be friends, who knows. I am shy, so I wouldn't just go up to them and want to be their friends. So last summer, I walked a goat down there so I wouldn't look suspeicios, and they were outside, but they just stared at me, they didn't smile, say hi, or even wave. Sorry.

Put an add on craigslist saying you have 11 acres that needs baled. They'll be beating down your door trying to pay you to let them bale it for you!

To me they sound like the PEREFCT Neighbors. As you stated quiet. They are not calling and complaining about anyone's chickens, or how people keep walking or riding by their home taking inventory.

You stated you stopped in and the lady was very nice, she obviously let you look around.
These people sound allot like our family, we mind our own business. Take care of our own business, and do not encourage the locals to stop by on a whim looking for opportunities or freebies. In fact we are triple fenced and anyone coventing what is ours is met with a very unwelcomed encounter.

When and if they ever decide to harvest their hay, I hope they find some deserving kind hearted people to donate or sell it to. If they do not, I hope they continue to cut it and keep the fire dangers to a minimum. It also makes the property look much more appealing as it does ours on each mow. On occassion I will invite some friends to bring in large flocks of sheep to feed early in the year and again early fall on a few of the pastures.
These people would never expect this, it is done because they don't expect or covent what is not theirs.
Life is not always fair, but it is what you make of it.
I hope they enjoy their goats and privacy.

* My first visit to NC I see this pretty field of teal-green grass. I'd been hoping to find something nicer for my yard in FL, so I ask the farmer there what kind of grass it is. He looks at me like I have 2 heads and says "THIS STUFF?!!? It's just timothy!!" I thank him and drive over and first thing ask my grandpa and uncle where I can get "Just Timothy" grass seed for my front yard in FL. Thought they'd die laughing b/f they explained what was so funny!!! SOMETIMES when you don't KNOW, you just DON'T KNOW!!!!

Yep, bottom line is, it is there's to do as they please...however, maybe being unaware of what could have been, you can politely educate them as to what they had and not needing it is a way to make a little extra change and help thy neighbor too!
This is a chance for you to make some good friends and really good neighbors!

GO FOR IT!

Ashlyn, instead of being jealous of what these folks have you should learn how to be thankful for what you DO have. If you want to have something a little nicer then get a job, or a 2nd job, or even a 3rd job and earn it. You state they have never made a move to get to know you - well, you haven't exactly been extending the "good neighbor" hand either so it's just as much your fault as theirs. So you live in a 1970's single wide and they have a barn that's worth more than your house...you have a HOUSE to sleep in, right?

I understand your frustration with the price of hay and you don't have enough but 9-10 acres of land is PLENTY for 4 horses if you get out there and CLEAR IT and plant your own hay....

Instead of grouching about what someone else has, how about turning that energy into something productive and do something about what you CAN change - your own circumstances. Cause you have NO control over what someone else does...

About a job, I am too young to have a job, when I am old enough, I will go to the feed store and get an application. I have a small chicken business that gets me about $50 profit per month, not didlysquat, but it allows me to buy special things for precious goaties. Right now, I like goaties more than some people, but that is my problem. Perfect neighbors? We have somewhat perfect neighbors, just not these ones. I am sorry, but it didn't take 50 years of farming to think that was hay. It was seperate from their house area, etc. Enjoy their goats? They are probably going to eat them. I enjoy my goats, but by seeing how terrified they were when we were riding down the road, I don't think they enjoyed them very much.

We have a hay field, but it is only 6 acres and doesn't provide us for the whole year. The 9-10 acres has pretty poor grass growth and has lots of trees. And were you calling us lazy??
