First off, I realize that they are, indeed, chickens and not puppies, goat kids, kittens or anything like that. That said, I realize that about 95% of chickens won't run up to you with the grandest exuberance whenever you enter their coop, just waiting for you to pick them up and snuggle with them (and if you ARE one of those lucky chicken owners that has a chick that;s like that, don't rub it in!
un Just kidding!
Tell me your secret!!
).
But come on... I can't get within about 3 feet of mine or else they will fling themselves against the hardware cloth that confines them in the coop, frantically trying to put as much space as possible between themselves and the huge, ferocious chicken-eating monster (that would be me. And I'm a vegetarian, for pete's sake!
). So instead of the usual Watermelon treat, I just cooked them oatmeal, figuring maybe they will come up to me when they see what scrumptious delicacies I have for them today. Nope. I sat there for quite a while-- total avoidance on their part. They will love it, as long as I'm not in the coop with them.
I've had them since they were about 2-3 days old and we handled them a lot. *sigh* I just don't get it. I'm the bringer of the food and treats-- they should love me!
Oh well, I guess I feel a bit better now after venting. It's just that everyother animal we have here is a lap animal. Even my goats (especially the kids
). Again, I don't expect the chickens to fight over who gets to sit on my lap, but it would be nice if they wouldn't act like I'm in there with a chainsaw, trying to cut their heads off.
Hopefully my BLRWs that are in the bator now will be friendlier, if they hatch. I'll be the first thing they see, so maybe they will bond more to me...
Thanks for letting me vent! I'm all done now.
