Need warm prayers for 5 little ones...

@Sara Ranch :

Here are some good thoughts.
Chickens have feathers and feathers are warm.
That's why lands end makes so much money from down coats.

Chickens go to sleep when it's dark and stay asleep until the sun comes up

They are UNDER something with low clearance
Not up in a tree out in the wind.

If you can't even get your arm in there easily it seems likely that it would be difficult for the bigger types of predators to reach them too.

The ground holds onto the warmth from the day (thermal mass)
And the barn is above it holding that heat close to the ground where the chicks are.
Much warmer than your body feels standing up.

I really think if you can't get them out of there tonight they'll be okay. Just be up super early to catch them when they wake up in case they wander. ( or find a way to actually block them in there for the night like a big board or something. )

Hoping for the best. :hugs

Update -

Thank you for the warm thoughts and the prayers for my 5 little ones.

Last night, about midnight, I was out there with a stronger flashlight, checking on them. They were all huddled together but there was still no way to get them out. (The babies accessed the small space that they huddled in from under the barn coop. I couldn't reach it or see into it from the other side of the barn coop. The barn coop is on an uneven slop, so the terrain varies under the barn coop.)

This morning, I was out before sunrise with a dish of warm food. I was very blessed to see one of the babies come out and run towards me. Then another one came out. Then the third one came out. No one else. I called to them. I prayed for them to come out. I was down on my hands and knees and tried to reach under. Fast forward. All 5 babies are in the semi-warm house, sleeping. All 5 babies survived the night.

I did loose another bird though due to the cold. He wouldn't cuddle/huddle with anyone else during the night. :hit

Again, thank you for the warm thoughts and prayers. I am keeping my 5 little ones inside the house until temps warm up a bit. Gotta figure something else out to keep them from huddling under the barn coop at night. (Suggestions??) Yes, the barn coop door is open all day so they could go inside if they wanted to.

Take some chicken wire and go around the bottom of the barn so they can't fit back under. Praise the Lord that your 5 babies are OK. :)

I'd be spending the afternoon securing that area so you don't have a repeated night of worry!

Glad that most of the chicks survived and came out. Sorry you lost one. I also would today bloak off the area so they don't get under there again. I have used old gates, fence wire, posts, and other things lying around to block area like that. Even garbage bags full of old clothes could be molded to fit the area to block it temporarily.

The bags of clothes... for an "in a pinch solution"!
Absolutely brilliant suggestion!

Thank you BYC family!

The little ones are in Sick Bay in the house. They are staying in tonight. I'll let them go back out tomorrow, when it's warmer. (They shiver when the temps are in the 50's. It's hard for me to put them back out when the temps are in the teens, in the sun.)

I don't have spare clothes or towels to use. I am working on another project today/tomorrow. Then I will try to block off that area somehow/someway. Not sure how to do it so that there is no access from under the coop barn. If I could stuff clothes and stuffs there, that would work...but since I don't have that, that's not an option. *sigh* The answer will appear... I just have to be patient. :)
