Thanks for directing me to your site! How much sqr. feet do you give each of your birds or pairs? I am looking at building an aviary to hold 2 pairs. It would be 10x10 is this enough or do I need more space?

1) I plan on just buying one pair, and let them have babies. From thier babies I will keep a male and female and let that be my second pair. Is this okay, or will the genetics be messed up since they are from the same family?

They should be fine the first generation, but its always good to get new bloodlines in your stock.

2) In your post you said you could buy 2 pairs for 103$. (did you mean to say 1) Where is that? the cheapest I have seen is 90$.

I don't know if you are looking at hatcheries (don't buy from them), but most breeders that have websites will sell pairs for $50-$70 dollars, $70 on the higher end. If you find a local breeder, you could probably get them cheaper than that.

3) BBB can you show me a pic of you aviary and setup? I would LOVE to see it!
He doesn't have any anymore, had to sell out. I believe he is trying to get back into them, I would love to see contruction photos! hint hint

Thanks so much for the help! So BBB had to sell hus ducks?

Oh. I am having a few doubts. Will you help me choose?! Okay I want and love Mandarins! But I want baby ducklings, so I can raise em' myself and put them in the tub, watch swim, and all that. It is so hard for me to make up my mind! I keep changing, what is your though on what I should do?

yep, That's all right, talk about sucking! I do have pics of the aviaries, but they are real, pics, not digitals, I'll try to scan some and see if I can add them as everybody has been wanting to see them.
I had nearly 1000 or so birds from 100 species at that time, no way to move all them, then I finally got a messy inheritance straightened out and am now back on my 150 acre family farm, so it's time to get them all back.
I had them for over 20 years, and miss them a ton.
I had some awesome set ups too, the Bronx Zoo came down one year and interviewed me, videoed my set ups, and later approved me for collecting and housing a very large collection of waterfowl for them while they built a massive waterfowl exhibit for them, that was quite an honor to be trusted that much by them, it had to go threw the Wildlife Conservation Society's Curators Board for approval there at the zoo, they dont play!!
And yes, I meant 2 pairs for $100, I personally know people that still sell them for $40-$45 over $60 is crazy over $45 is for woddies in my opinion, they are the most common of all captive migratory waterfowl..

Oh, Giffy, that was NOT "incorrect" dead on for Federal, maybe, IN ADDITION, but I was speaking on a Federal Level which covers ALL of us reguardless of individual state laws, there's no way anyone person can know all 50 states individual laws, shoot I cant keep up with half of GA's,

There are a small handful of aggravating states that do require additional papers for poultry in general, so anyone may want to check with your own local state. But all of us MUST have the Federal papers for any native migratory waterfowl, period...
The FEDERAL paper work (U.S.D.I.) is only required for waterfowl that naturally migrates threw the North American continent.
Over half of way you can keep in captivity does not require it.

10x 10 is fine for 2 pair, no more though, bigger is always better with wild birds
