So I am planning on getting 6 chicks, in hopes of ending up with atleast 4 hens. First should I get more chicks if I want atleast 4 hens? Ya know to plan for ooopps roos? I cant have a rooster as I am in town, but can have chickens. I am wanting laying hens, ones that dont go broody to often, are docile/quiet/friendly & winter hardy. Here are the breeds I have been looking at and would love to get you opinion on which combo would be best.

Buff Orpington
Ameraucana/Easter Egger
New Hampshire
Barred Rock
Australorp
RIR

Ok I think I have asked enough for now. Give me 5 minutes I will think of more questions. hehe

You can get all pullets ( baby hens ) at a farm and feed store. The hatcheries have a 95% + rate of sexing chicks correctly. If you get straight run ( chicks which haven't been sexed ) you can figure about 50/50 pullets and cockerels ( baby roos ). Sounds like you need to get pullets then you won't have roos to rehome. As far as breeds, I've had BOs, RIRs, GLWs and BRs. They were all great layers and friendly girls.

I plan on getting my chicks from a local feed store, who as far as I know are getting them from a large hatchery. My SIL said that if I want to end up with 4 I should get 6. Blah I just need to be on a huge farm so I can have as many as I want an not have to narrow it down. lol Thanks for the input on the breeds you have had. I think I know 3 of the breeds I am going to get for sure. I feel like a ding bat asking almost the same things. Just trying to learn what I can, thanks so much ladies.
