Needed: feeder protected from water

at some farm stores they have galvanized steel circular "covers" that will fit on smaller feeders. call around and ask for a top to a 20 or 30 pound feeder to keep out the rain.

Tell, my chicken house is pretty small! It is about 4x8 and needs to fit 17 chickens, nests and roosts. They have a large lot to peck around in. I have a covered shelter for them, but it's easier to feed them near the chicken house where the food is.

i put my feeder in the hen house in the winter and then take it out in the summer but it is strange that they dont have tops on them??????

How about these...

(I think you can get Omlet products in the States too)

Will keep the food dry, are designed to attach to the run mesh (although I'm currently trying to find out how big the catches are on the back of the feeder to ensure they will fit through the mesh of our run) and can be popped in the dishwasher to get clean. Will keep four hens fed for two days apparently.

Pretty nifty, I thought...

Right now I also have a 4 x 8 coop, so I dont have too much room inside. What I use has been working pretty well for me. I bought a stell feeder from TSC, the one that feeds 15-30 birds. I think it was $23 or something. Then at Walmart they have in the dog/cat section a..pan? Im not sure what its suppose to be used for. Its about 2 inches deep and 13-14in wide. I flipped that over and put it on top of the feeder. It has keep most of the rain out. Every now and then I do have a problem when the rain comes in sideways, but it only gets a little bit of the feed wet(at the bottom) and I just scoop it out and it fills up again.

Let me see if I have any pictures, or can find something online.

Just a side note.. Im not trying to sound mean or anything, but did you mean you are keeping 17 chickens in the 4ft x 8ft coop?

This is the feeder I bought http://www.tractorsupply.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay_10551_10001_34406_-1______14602%7C16201%7C34406?listingPage=true&Special=false

And
the other thing I got was this http://www.tractorsupply.com/webapp...02|14604|48656?listingPage=true&Special=false But the one that I bought is only an inch or two deep. Not 3 inches deep.

What I do is fill the feeder all the way to the top and then take the smaller pan and flip it upside down on the feeder. That way rain doesnt get in the top of the feeder and it also hangs over the sides some to keep the rain from get in the bottom part of the feeder. Like I said I only have a problem every now and then when the rain decides to come at a slant(not too often).

That is a GREAT idea. I have the steell feaders. I'll have to get the pans at walmart and see if it works. I know just where they are!! Thank you.
Yes, I have a 4x8 chicken house. My husband designed it. They have 3 roosts that stair step in the back. Towards the front is 8 nests. But can you believe that 17 birds use only 3-4 nests! They have a huge fenced in yard with shelters and hiding places. I am at my max for chickens for them to be healthy and happy.

could you make something with pipping...where you take a pipe cap off to fill and put the pip cap back on...just a thought??? wide wide pipe of course
