Needing a question answered about Marans.

I'm fairly new to chicken raising. I'm wanting to start raising Marans and I was wondering about the best place to buy chickens. I've heard you don't want to buy Marans from hatchries, but do want to buy them from breeders because of the egg color. Where is a good place to buy Maran chaickens from that will produce the quailty dark eggs? Thanks in advance.

We got our cuckoo maran off of Craigslist actually, Last summer she laid pretty dark brown eggs, this summer they have been lighter for some reason.

just a guess here maybe the change in weather it depends where you live that's what happened to my maran

you should look for people in your area or look on the buy-sell-trade section on here. You might even have good luck with craigslist. You should also look into chicken shows and swaps coming up in the state you live in. I got some nice BCM off craigslist about a yr ago. Have you talked to anyone off of the Maran threads on here? My Marans start of laying good brown eggs at the beginning of the year but they get lighter as the gland providing the coating runs out - or something like that anyway.
