Needing advice on a sick duck.

Which Metacam do you have for your dogs? Is it the 1.5 mg/ml or 0.5 mg/ml? How much does you hen weigh? Must know her weight!

One of those is tetracycline, the other is oxytetracycline, neither are are very likely to treat the type of bacteria that are common in hens with salpingitis.

Edited to add:
Correction to the above... One of your drugs is a combo of tetracycline and neomycin. Neomycin could be used if the infection were in the intestines. Neomycin is only used for infections in the intestines.

Your first post says this you noticed this the Saturday before the 9-20, so this has been going on for almost two weeks now? Hard to say if the infection started back then, or if it started when you removed the stuck egg, but either way, I am almost 100% certain that she has a serious infection.

The wildlife rehab place should have Baytril (enrofloxacin), but again, it really would be best to have a vet look at her.

Baytril is banned for use in poultry, so you have to consider that. To me it doesn't matter, and my vet has me use it with a promise that I will never eat the eggs of meat of a bird I use it on.

I have the top one, 1.5 for metacam.
I am going to head to the vets and beg them for baytril. I will also get the feeding tube and a bigger syringe. What do I tube feed her? Should I pick up some recovery dog/cat food and make into a slurry??
I haven't been able to reach the wildlife centre so I'm going to see what I can do in the mean time.
Wish me luck.
Do you have an idea of baytril dose if I get a weight on her? That will also be on my list.

Take her with you and beg them to look at her. Tell them you suspect a reproductive tract infection. They will not give you Baytril without seeing her unless you are a really good client. They can look up the dose in their books, but the most common dose seems to be about 10 mg/kg twice a day for 5 days.

The meloxicam dose I use for this sort of thing is 0.25 mg/kg twice a day.

Oh, and I just read that ducks can get salpingitis from a protozoa. This I read on the chickenchick's website, but I was not able to confirm that info. So it might be worth asking your vet about also giving metronidazole just in case it's that.

Metronidazole and Baytril can be given together.

Like Baytril, metronidazole is banned for use in poultry.

You said you were going to get a tube... I recommend a size 18 french, and a 60 ml catheter tip syringe. For feeding I tube Kaytee Exact which you can get from Petsmart or Petco.

Food scale you can get at Walmart, Target, etc.

Okay! I have made some progress...

I found a vet willing to script me out some baytril! I am going to bring her into the clinic for an accurate weight at 1 o'clock this afternoon. I still have to find a scale for at home. But I could bring her into the clinic each day for a weigh in if I have to. I may have even talked some lovely tech into helping/showing me the proper way to tube feed her.

I don't think I can find the proper kaytee product you tube feed. I live in a small town, and we don't have a pet smart or petco and we don't have a target or a Walmart either. Lol. I'll see what I can find though.

Thank you. I just want her better.

Just coming home from the vet. They were wonderful. She was given an injection of baytril to get things started. I have everything I need to start tube feeding, except an extra set of hands which are on the way.
The vet offered sub q fluids, but we are going to try some food and more electrolyte water and see how she does. If she isn't perking up soon I will bring her back to get hydrated.
So it looks like this vet will continue to help me with my girl and I'm so relived.

Thank you for the quick replies today Casportpony. I am so greatful for all the knowledge and help!! Pogo is to!

I am so happy for you! Some sub q fluids would be really helpful, so you might want to think about having them do that. If not, you need to start by tubing fluids. Please do trust me on this... fluids must be given first.

How much does she weigh? Let me know and I will come up with a tubing schedule for you.

Awe thank you so much! She weighed in at 2.5kg.

We had a successful tube feeding. I have her 25ml to start and will repeat this in a couple hours. Everything has stayed down so far. Following the wildlife centres advice, I am feeding a can of critical care dog/cat wet mixed with electrolyte water and a small amount of olive oil.

Thanks again! I am hoping to see her perk up in the next couple of days. This has been a long ride already... I want off. Lol.

She needs no less than 125 ml of fluids per day, and if she were mine I would shoot for twice that.

Tube feeding food if they are dehydrated can kill them.

If she were mine I would do 40-60 ml fluids now, wait 60-90 minutes and repeat. Then do one or two more times at 4-6 hours apart. Once you have done that, then tube food.

I would not give oil of any type, period. If she aspirates oil she could get lipoid pneumonia, which would probably be fatal.

How much did you tube?
