Needle feathers?

Anyone know why my RIR's head and neck look this way? Grey needle-like feathers. She doesn't act sick.

Hey this is the reason I popped on the board here tonight to post pictures of my beloved Buff named Winnie. I don’t want to hijack a thread but her neck looks like that too ! I thought it was too late in the season for a molt but I am no expert.
Here is a pic or two - looks like the same thing ?
Again sorry if this is considered a hijack in the forum world.

Looks like the same to me. I remember their little feathers looking like that as chicks, but it surprised me on a hen.
 
It seems like such a silly time to molt, but I guess nature knows what's up with that, as we all have molting birds and it's awfully cold out there!

I have several that are still laying, with a mild molt, but some are just running around the yard looking like little footballs on stilts, not laying at all. They are quite crabby with me and the other hens too. Poor, bald, darlings.
