Neighbor Dog Attacked Another Bird

Many dog breeds, if not most, can be trained to guard chickens -- but it does take training, which takes time, and some knowledge of dog training.

I'll definitely be putting up a fence and looking into other options such as a guard animal that can stay outside when I'm gone. The chickens never fly over the fence - only the guineas and typically they fly back in when I get close. I just don't know why my guinea didn't fly back over....

The neighbor's dog is a nuisance. She'll come over at all times of the day and wander throughout our property. Yelling and chasing her off only makes her go back to her property line and start barking at me. For some reason, she seems to think this is her yard. Very frustrating.

I love my birds and will protect them as best I can - I just want to balance the protection with giving them as much freedom (safely) as I can.

Thanks to everyone for your replies.

... by the way, when I say I live in the country, I mean there are fields, pastures, wide open spaces and 15 mins worth of driving to the nearest store.

If your neighbors are already aware of their dog causing issues then you should befriend the dog and take it to the pound the next county over. AC might come get the dog,but you really don't want your neighbor seeing you hand over the dog. I gave up house siding AND a driveway to put a fence around my entire property. Well worth the money to keep the dogs out.

In most states you are permitted to shoot dogs that attack your flock. You would be wise to SSS if you decide to go that route.Law or not no one takes kindly to having their dog killed. If the neighbors are not interested in doing a kennel or chain then just take care of the dog yourself.Roaming dogs disappear all the time.

Sorry about your losses.

I have LGD's and they are great at protecting the animals here, however i only have barbwire fences on this 100 acres and if my dogs were to pursue another dog off this property and injure it say at the dogs house i would then be liable for their dogs injury and could get into trouble.

I have only seen dogs down here a few time in the thirty years i have lived here the last time was 6 years ago it was after one of my foals at night, and my dogs killed that dog so if ya want a dog that is willing to fight to protect its flock it is better to have a few so the said dog does not get away, it is the same as SSS here but i do not need a gun just a backhoe

,

Just so you know my dogs are wonderful with other dogs if they are introduced properly and pose no threat to the livestock here they will get between a new dog and the livestock and stand their ground till they are sure it is safe, but if a new start trouble then they won't be here very long. it is sad but that's what i want my dogs to do just like any other predator it is their job to keep them safe.

A hot wire is a good deterrent for most dogs however my LSG dogs learned to step over the low ones

the neighbor's dog was over again this morning sniffing around the chicken run. I chased it off twice and even fired a shotgun in the air to scare it off - hoping to have it associate the scary noise with the chickens. the neighbor's don't really care about locking up the dog - in fact, they drove by while I was chasing their dog away and didn't do anything about it. a barbed wire fence is coming soon and will be followed by an LGD. I do plan to have more animals so its something I should do anyway.

If you get a dog and it becomes friends with your dog it is not likely it is going to stop that dog from coming over and killing more of your birds just letting ya know, you are gonna have to keep that dog at bay while your dog grows up and becomes territorial.

my chickens free range. I live next to an apt complex that is super dog friendly. HOWEVER, the dogs never roam free around here. Well, accept Angel, but she's a good girl. She was told no one time after getting one of my silkies in her mouth. The silkie had no teeth marks, she was not hurt. I think Angel thought she was a stuffed toy! Well anyway. I have a fenced area for MY DOGS. I have a boston bully who will kill my chickens in a heart beat. SO, that being said...

Sometimes you need to fence to keep out as much as you need to fence to keep in.

She thinks its her yard because she had marked it. If it were me, I'd break out a HHR gin on her butt. It will only sting she' llget the message

Well, one thing is for sure. Your birds are not safe free ranging under the current situation. That dog will be back to kill one after the other until they are all gone. One was really bad, two was most terrible, three utterly egregious, any more and there aren't words effective enough to describe. While the neighbors should keep their dog under their control and your birds should be able to enjoy their own yard the sad fact is that right now they cannot.
