Sorry for your loss. It is entirely possible that their careless attitude was due to whatever they were going through with the wife's health, like you said. You never know what is going through people's minds sometimes.

Have you ever considered getting an LGD (Livestock Guardian Dog) for protection
from predators, including protection from other dogs?
Good Livestock Guardian won't let other dogs to your property.
He won't kill them, but the barking/growling at least would alert you.
