Neighbor dog problem, what would you do?

Ok, sounds like you are one of the younger members if you're talking about your dad doing something about the neighbor's dog so I will answer your question a little more gently than some of the other posts sounded (not that I disagree with what they said though).

Your dad is correct in that he doesn't want to cause problems. Unless you are willing to help put up fences to make sure your dogs can't get out, you really can't point a finger at your neighbor's dog that comes over because yours wander too. Having an unspayed female means you have to take responsibility for any litters that happen because you chose not to spay her. If you are not a breeder than she should be spayed, it's much better for her health and solves the puppy problem as well. If you are really far away from any clinic that will offer inexpensive spaying, you're going to have to keep her confined in a garage or the house till she's out of heat till you can afford to get her spayed.

As far as your neighbor's dog roaming, let me ask you this. If you didn't have a female that kept getting pregnant by this dog, would it bother you to have him coming onto your property? The fact that your neighbor's dog is intact is not as important because even if he was, you would still have to deal with the possibility that she would get pregnant by another intact stray dog. Simply because you haven't seen one come around when she's in heat, doesn't mean they don't and wouldn't make puppies if the neighbor's dog hadn't beaten them to it.

I originally read this post and though "are you serious?" but then I saw you are from KY. Please go immediately to your nearest shelter and spend the day watching how many dogs/puppies they euthanize each day because of people like you. See how many of these dogs are hunting dogs/ farm dogs. Better yet go to my local shelter and help them throw life animals in the incinerator. Also if you are one of the many people I pass everyday with their dogs tied 24/7, please get rid of your dogs. You don't deserve to be a pet owner.

I absolutely agree!!! If your dog is on a chain, she is confined. However, even if she is in a kennel, dogs can and will breed through chain link. Next time the dog comes over, give him a hot dog, catch him and take him to animal control. They will have to pay to get him out and that will get old.

And, there are absolutely health risks to keeping a male intact. Their prostates can become enlarged.

ETA, I am really disappointed that someone asks for advice and is condemned for keeping a dog on a chain. While I don't think that is the ideal situation for any dog, it's really not my place to tell someone they are unworthy of pet ownership. The OP obviously wanted help, just tell him what you would do. Mention the clinics. But I doubt being judgmental is the answer.

The point is THEY'RE NOT GOING TO. They've already proved that with God knows how many litters, and I wouldn't place bets on EVERYONE keeping their dogs on their property. Chances are if they're not going to take responsibility enough to keep their dogs home, they're not going to take the responsibility to neuter them. Seems like the pot calling the kettle black to me.

You let two of your dogs roam all the time and your mad that someone else is doing the same thing? That's so hypocritical!!!

I didn't catch where someone griped about keeping a dog on a chain, someone was like 'whaaat?' when she said she had a terrier in a cage AND on a chain. The rest either ain't there or I missed it.

Chaining an in heat female is not going to keep her from being bred. A little basic education should prove that.

Ok, lets say this thread was about a neighbors loose dog killing her free range chickens, on her property, and not impregnating her female dog. Just about everyone of us on here would say that its the neighbors fault for letting their dog roam on someone elses property. Regardless of the way, shelley has her animal contained in her yard. Why shouldnt her neighbors be just as responsible?

Have they shown any indication that they ever would be? Your head's in the sand. They ain't a gonna. And this has nothing to do with 'I let my two run and he shouldn't' and 'who's wrong and who's right' (and if THAT sort of thinking every solved ANY neighbor dispute about dogs, or any OTHER problem, just lemme know!).

THIS IS BIOLOGY, K?

it's simple. You want to have a dog that is breedable in heat, and you don't want her bred, you have to keep her penned up good. This is not exactly front page scientific research breaking out today.

You actually think you're gonna chain Bessie to a porch post and not have a litter of PUPS in 60 days that look like every doggy's daddy on the street? Those dogs WILL GET LOOSE, and if one don't breed her, another will. BIOLOGY. PEN THE DOG UP.
