My neighbor has free range chickens and they often come over to the area at my house where I have several bird feeders and I have put out cracked corn for some of the larger birds. I don't mind them coming to visit and eating the corn, but they also poop where they eat and then scratch it around while getting to the corn and dropped seed from the feeders. Is it safe for them to eat where they poop?

Do you have any chickens? If so your neighbor's birds could pass mites, lice , worms, disease to your flock

No, I don't have any chickens, I just let them come over and eat what they can find scratching the mulch where the bird seed falls.

It's the nature of chickens. There's no way to stop them eating, scratching and pooping where they want. Your neighbor should be keeping their chickens on their own property and not letting them wander.

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan :D

If you don't mind them visiting, then I would not worry about their eating habits, that is typical chicken behavior. They will definately clean up under your feeder for you.

I really don't mind, I would have some of my own, but I travel a lot for work and can't take on the responsibility of caring for them, so right now I'm kind of a grandma. They visit and then they go home. :)
