Neighbor threatened to shoot chickens

Just curious. Our neighbors across the fence/private road have a single retired female as neighbor. She breeds dogs. Gives them hard time on any occasions, neighbors, not the dogs.
Anyhow. Neighbors have chickens just like we do. One of their roosters and a hen jumped the fence today into that lady property. She managed to force them back into their "residential" property, but called neighbor out and told her that next time this happens, she'll shoot the chickens. She does have plenty of guns, she bragged to me about that once.
Thoughts? Legal or not?

Tricky,if the chickens are on her property and the dogs attacked them,then there would be nothing you could do.I think that it could fall under animal cruelty for her just to shoot them.You'd have to check your local and state laws.In Michigan if your dogs came on to my property and attacked my livestock i do have the legal right to defend my livestock unless the attacker is a protected species .

Without knowing what your local laws are, my first thought is that she is probably within her rights to eliminate the chickens if they come onto her property. She can protect her property the same as you can protect yours if her dogs come into your yard. Of course, threatening to shoot someone's animals isn't the way to create a friendly neighborhood, but at least she gave a verbal warning about what her intentions are if it should happen again. If I were in your neighbor's shoes, I would take immediate action to see that my birds couldn't leave my property and end up being killed.

This would depend on our local laws. That being said, it does fall to each person who owns an animal to make sure they contain that animal to their own property - I can't imagine the chicken owners would welcome the lady's dogs just hopping the fence, right?

Agreed. Rude and cruel, but it is what it is. Thank you. THey need to clip their wings, that's for sure. Not to jinx, mine are smart enough not to jump a 6 foot fence. They did walk on top of 8 or so ft tall hedge, but do wisely stay inside the property fence.

I think the dog lady is within her rights BUT it's not likely that chickens are going to kill her dogs (like vice versa). Well, maybe if they choked on a chicken bone she could sue and I bet she would

Actually not legal or it might be not sure and not right in the head, I would legitly Go over to the dog lady's house and wave a gun in her face and say ' want to shoot my chickens I can shoot you or your dogs, your choice' Because I'm pretty sure one day if it hasn't already happened that her dogs got into the chicken lady's yard (front or back doesn't matter) I'm sorry but that old lady just seems like a beach

Let's not judge. She's a very lonely person with a lot of envy in her heart. Her dogs are her life. Her neighbor is a sore in her eye, as they accomplished in few years and in a new to them country more than she accomplished in lifetime. Humanely, I do understand her.
I'd suggest to put this thread to peace. It's a lesson to everyone, one way or another.
