My neighbor's 5 yo female Emu is not doing good. She called this morning and asked me some questions that I know nothing about.

Can ya'll help me out here with some suggestions?

Symptoms are:

red mouth and throat
not drinking and not interested in eating
carrying neck very low, almost drooping and very weak and slightly off balance
stop in egg laying

Does this sound like parasites? I asked her if she has ever wormed them and she said that she didn't know she should, I read that they should be wormed a few times a year is that right?
She has had them for 2 years and they have been healthy. The male is not showing any symptoms.

Thanks in advance!!!!!

I wish I could help, but mine have never been sick. Number one thing to ask is did she eat anything she shouldn't. They are always getting into things. They should be wormed on a regular basis like any other animal, especially if around other livestock. I use safeguard goat liquid wormer. It tells you how much to give by weight. Could an egg be stuck? Does she get oyster shell in her food? Parasistes should be easy to see since they have no down feathers. I would call a vet about this, a sick emu is a very big problem.
