When my lab was a little over a year old he did the same thing.

I imagine he just caught the toad and had it in his mouth but didn't eat it. He started foaming at the mouth and slobbering everywhere.

I called my vet and he told me to rinse his mouth out really well and it would eventually stop and it did. He puked a couple times too, but he is fine and has suffered no long lasting effects. I suppose he's not so curious about toads now.
