Neighbor's dog came back for our ducks today! What to do?

Pics
I have had this happen the neighbors dog wiped out all but one of my daughter 4 h project. She is now 31 we live I. The same house with the same neighbor! Think about what your action are you take! Was I mad your damn right I was. But I also want to continue to live in my peaceful neighborhood and enjoy driving up every day! The post above about chopping the dogs head off! Personally I think is better off left out of it this is an animal lovers site I feel terrible for you! But if the dog got in so can a coyote. This is sad but is it worth world war three or DI you go speak to them on one on one and continue to be neighbors.
Also if you can make a loud noise (i.e., a bunch of metal pans falling, a firecracker) if the dog enters your yard, you may be able to deter the dog. It may take two or three times and require coordination to set the dig free so you expect him and can set up the noise trap, but it will be worth it.

Theres no mentiom of taking the dogs head in the comment you quoted. There is one earlier, but it was explaining literally how it would be tested for rabies without being quarantined

A dog that is agressive towards humans is always a bad thing.

If you have a fence for your ducks, you should be fine.
It sounds like the dog may have threatened by the shovel probably should have let it out. As hard as it is to have an invasion of this style it may have been best to let the dog go. If the duck dies tell the neighbor to tie it to the dogs neck. Some folks say crating a dog in the coupe or yard and leash exposure is also good! We lost one to the neighbors dog in our yard tied it to the dog for a day and that dog never looked through the fence again. We’re there is a flock there will be predators domestic and wild. I never saw were the breed of dog was mentioned. Herding, Shepard, putty?

I'm late to this ball game...but my husband works for the Health Dept in our state and is the person responsible for dealing with dog bites in the county. IN our state (your laws may be different), any dog bite that is reported to health officials (either your doctor or a hospital) MUST be reported to authorities by state law. At that point, the authority in that county MUST see vet records to show that the dog was PROPERLY vaccinated for rabies. If the owner CANNOT show vaccination records FROM A VET (many try to do it themselves), then they have two options - 1) dog must be quarantined by the state for 14 days at owner's expense OR 2) dog is put down, head chopped off and sent to a lab for rabies analysis.

Either way, these people can threaten all they want but the law is on YOUR side. Their animal came onto your property and threatened your livestock and yourselves. You are completely within your right to shoot it, hit it with a shovel, or do anything else to it that you choose. If they don't like it, they can pay the damages and keep their dog on their property.
Thank you very much for your answer! - Yes, the doctor told me that they have to report it to the authorities and that the dog must be quarantined for two weeks.
But according to the animal-police officer who called me today (see my post above) i am not allowed to hit an animal with a shovel. That is permitted only in self-defense after the dog has eaten you. 😜

There must be something in the air today.... I noticed my ducks were running and looked panicked earlier today when I looked out the window. I looked a little closer and realized there was a stray cat out there stalking them in their pen. I rushed out the backdoor in my socks with my dog hot on my heels. The cat saw us and panicked....couldn't figure out how to get out of the fence (ours is 4 ft tall) and was throwing itself at the fence in terror. I climbed the fence into the duck pen since it would have taken me too long to run around to the gate. Tore my sweat pants in the process....lol. Cornered the cat who finally figured out he/she could jump OVER the fence to get out. It took off with my dog chasing it like the hounds of hell...until she got to the limits of our backyard....ha ha. I have been checking on the ducks every hour since then....no sign of the cat coming back.
Wow! What a day! I hope the cat didn't come back? - You have a good doggie!

If my dog got lose I pray nobody just shoots it! And growling at a woman who rightly feels nervous so is holding a shovel is a far cry from an aggressive dog who hunted a bird.
Try working with your neighbor first. All info re rabies is correct.

This 100%! You did absolutely NOTHING wrong. If we're being honest here, you've shown nothing but kindness, patience and understanding in spite of this. Keep in mind that a lot of people act out defensively, oftentimes threatening and desperately trying to point the blame away from themselves, when they know they're in the wrong. You have nothing to worry about legally and if your neighbor is ignorant enough to continue, the law is on your side, especially since you have taken steps to notify the authorities and document everything. Please take care of your bites. It can turn lethal before you know it.

I agree that it'd be beneficial to be able to get along with your neighbors, but they should be the ones reaching out in hopes of repairing the relationship they destroyed. You went above and beyond and already tried to keep things amicable, but they crossed the line by threatening you. Plus it's obvious that you can't count on their word. They proved that today when the dog came back.
Everybody is telling me that i did nothing wrong! Thank you very much for this! - However i do feel bad about it. And my biggest worry is that that dog comes back, snatches another duck and the neighbors will not bring it back...

That’s the one I am talking about. I have seen nice dogs be a chicken killer. My first chicken killer! Is pictured here! I would no more hit or threaten him than kill my bird he is a good dog we mad a mistake and did not introduce him correctly. He killed twice when we figured out to stop the madness. Only difference is he was our dog!

Yikes. Lol. People can be ridiculous when they feel a right is been treaded on. I am pro animal, but I would hit it before it ate me. I would be on your side. That‘s ridiculous to have to let it get that far. There must be a happy medium in this case.
