This morning after my DH let my Harlequins out of their house into their pen the neighbor's dog dug under the chainlink fence and attacked them. He chased all but 2 females back under the fence into his yard. He killed 2 of my drakes and injured 6 others. I had to have a friend come over with her son to help me get them all back into their pen. 3 of the girls are in a small pen inside my hen house as they are haveing a hard time walking. One drake has the skin torn up on his neck and 1 looks like he has a broke wing. This is the same dog that killed one of their goats last year. I caught it with one of the girls in it's mouth. Ofcouse there was no one home. My husband is going to go and talk to them when he gets home tonight. These are the ducks I get from Holderreads thei spring. I looked on their site to see what it would cost to replace them they start at $25 each. Would this be a good amount to tell them for compensationof the lost ducks?

Now you call animal control and file a report about this too. You may need this in order to collect your money, plus they will note the dangerous behavior of the dog and force the owners to put up a better fence etc to prevent this from happening again.

Compensation is not only what the replacement cost is, it is also the cost involved in raising them to this point. Plus the cost of the lost egg production value. This is way more then the 25 dollars you have paid. A good sized duck egg sells for 85 cents on Metzerfarms.com. Print our the page and use that as a reference.

i am so sorry about your ducks. Report this to animal control. Generally, if a dog has killed several times, they are confiscated and euthanized. That really is what needs to happen to that dog so another tragedy is avoided.

On compensation, you want to take your time and come up with a much more realistic estimate. Just the cost of buying another duck is where to begin. Then how about all the feed, lost egg production, etc? i've seen calculations on this board about how to build a more realistic list to calculate your actual losses. For the injured birds, they should have to pay for all vet care. i don't think you can charge for the duck's or your pain and suffering, which is a shame.

i'll try to look for those calculations. BTW - i saw on Judge Judy one time a woman taking her neighbor to court for their dog attacking her duck. Judge Judy read the dog owner's the riot act and the duck owner was awarded $2,500.

I'm so sorry that the dog was able to get in .. I was wondering if you could dig down along the fence and put hardware cloth or something to block his digging under... We had people move in next door to us last spring. they use the house on weekends and when the come in they bring their 6 dogs... I worried about them digging under out privacy fence for several months but they haven't..

Please keep us posted as to how the injured ducks are doing..

Don't forget the cost of shipping adult ducks ..

depends on what your neighbors are like and if you want to stay friends.

but if your friiends just what they cost you. or like Brindlebtch said.

I had animal control come over. And according to state law, they can't declare the animal "dangerous" as long as it's only killing animals, it has to attack a person first. He can kill all the animals he wants, but they can't do anything about it. The fact that I didn't see him coming into the duck pen, it would be my word against theirs, even though there was a hole under the fence. As of right now, there's nothing I can do.
