I have been losing chickens quite a bit a lately and today we found out why. My dh was outside and our lab took off for the coop he thought she was chasing a chick and went after her, well low and behold there were the neighbors dogs (from a mile away

) and they got my chickens. I lost 5 today

I cried and yelled at the neighbor, I feel bad for yelling but now I have to explain to the kids about their chickens and they were all my egg layers

The more I read this forum, the more I am convinced of the value of good fencing.

Bite the bullet and fence up.

What was the neighbor's response? Are they replacing your chickens? Are they paying for any damages to your coop? Are they going to take steps to confine their dogs? It's sad, but common for dog owners to not rectify a situation if there is no financial loss to them. Did you file a complaint with the sheriff or police department? I can sympathize. We have been hit with the grief caused by stupid people and their loose domesticated predators. Sorry for your loss.

Sorry.... I hate loosing chickens... Hopefully you can talk to your neighbor later and tell her your sorry and tell her about how important the chickens were to you.

I feel your pain.......I lost 6 last night to my neighbors dog. One was my beloved hen that I've had for years. Another was a hen that was sitting on a nest!!! The other 4 were pullets that I hatched out from eggs from a BYCer. Not only is there a $$$ loss but I have an emotional attachment to my birds also. Then the dog started to go after the cats (that were trying to defend the birds, bless their hearts) before I could catch it...so end of dog.

So now I'm torn--do I keep the chickens cooped up? Why do I have to keep my animals cooped up on my own property? But I hate to loose more to other dogs.....

ugggh....

I haven't seen my neighbors dog since I put my dogs electri collar on it...it really did work like a charm, my birds are unpenned for the first time in three years. It was mean...that dog yelped all the way home and never dared come back here...of course I had to go get the collar of it afterwards

Yes, maybe the neighbors will volunteer to pay for the fence. After all, it was their fault.

You must be kidding. This kind of person doesn't pay for anything. They go through life making problems for other people and then wonder why people don't like them and their dogs.
