Neighbor's dogs killed 16 of my chickens tonight.

Glad to hear that the neighbor paid.

I would still talk to animal control. Make a report even though he did pay. That way if his dogs come back and do it all over again there is a report about it.

Like I always say document, document and have a papertrail.

Too bad you did not get pictures of your birds.

I am in WV and I was told by our humane officer that if a dog is bothing my chickens I am allowed to shoot it but I must make sure I kill it and not just wound it or i will be responsible for vet bills. I didnt have the heart to shoot it b ut i did catch it a few times and take it to the pound which made them have to pay to get it back and I havent seen it since..lol

The thing is the fence is woven wire 2x4 on RR ties set in concrete. I think it's the gate that's a weak point but I had just reinforced it not too long ago. Argh.

I found another little Dutch this morning. She's not mine but one I was raising for a friend, but it was still nice to find a survivor.

Thanks again for your thoughts! I didn't take pictures, I was too upset. Now I know for next time. The second I see one of those dogs loose he'll get a call and maby animal control too. I think I made it clear to him that he has been dully warned. Of course he was in denial the whole time so next time he'll probably also claim he didn't know.

He said he thought I had the wrong impression of him (BTW, side story is I used to let him have access to the back of the land through mine until he started doing it without asking and got the horses all mixed up which is risky). I told him he could change that but I doubt he ever will. I can be a real witch (with a B) too and it takes me a LONG time to forgive and forget.

Sorry you lost birds.

If a dog gets your chickens the first thing that you should do is call animal control or the local law enforcement agency. Always get a paper trail started.

So sorry to hear. My neighbor's dog killed one of my beloved hens once. We called animal control and the dog was either put down or relocated. (I've heard both) Good luck! Call someone like animal control! Dogs will be history and you'll get your $ back for your losses.
