That dog is a predator just like a coyote or a raccoon or a hawk. Unless you want to keep loosing your birds to this animal, get the neighbour to fix his/her darned fence or tie up the dog.

We were out at our perimeter fence making a new place to move our compost pile today. The fence is up on a bank which goes down to a gravel road that divides my neighbor's property from ours. Our properties basically meet in the middle of the road. They have a fairly new dog, an Australian Shepherd/Blue Heeler mix. It isn't fenced in. It roams down the street and they haven't tried to train it at all. Yelling his name doesn't qualify as training in my book. Today, that dog came up a wooded bank, across the road and up our bank to the fence line, meaning it was on our property. My DH scared it off. I like my neighbors, but if that dog digs under my livestock fencing and kills a bird, he may not be going home. I'm still debating on giving them a warning if it happens the first time or just making him disappear. They are well aware that we have a large flock of chickens that freerange inside our fencing, so hopefully, I wont have to make that "warn 'em or shoot the dog" decision. However, when the dog wandered up to our place, we could hear people talking on their front porch, so they were home and should have been aware of where he was.

Tell your neighbor you have a high powered rifle and a scope to go with it. Then tell them you will have to take aim the next time thier dog "makes" its way through the fence. If you think these people care for your chickens, you are more than likely wrong. You need to inform them that they need to care for thier dog. It is a pretty simple decision to make. Do not make this a complicated, emotional issue. Just tell them they need to confine thier dog to thier property or it will not be returning to them.

I know exactly what you mean. I have not had one single time of talking to someone about their dog help anything. It really sucks. I want people to be responsible for their own animals, but some just won't.​

It's not a complicated issue, really, for me. My inclination is SSS, however, from all the discussion here, I wondered if I should give a warning rather than just kill the dog. Guess the warning should come before I lose a bird, not after. I have spent thousands over the years to confine my dogs to my property while others allow theirs to go wherever, whenever. There will always be people who think I'm an ogre for even contemplating shooting someone's dog, but once a chicken is dead, it's gone. It didn't get a second chance and neither should the dog, though it's the owner's fault 100% for not confining their animal. I'm someone who believes that ALL dogs should be fenced. If someone cannot afford a fence, they shouldn't get a dog, period.
As far as neighbor relations go, if they cared about my family and being a good neighbor, that dog would be contained and never allowed to set foot on my land. Pretty simple really. Wonder whether I should warn the neighbor that the dog was on my land today or just shoot it when it comes back.

i would let the nieghbors know before you shoot it . I have a cattle dog and she never hurts my birds just sniffs them and our friends who have one lets the dog sleep in the barn with the chickens but i guess not all heelers are the same . maybe the nieghbors didnt even kow she got out . if you heard voices on the porch maybe they had people over and they let the dog out on accident ? Let them know there dog was on ur property and hopefully they will do somthing about it if not at least you warned them

It is the dog owner's responsibility to contain his animal; at the same time it is the poultry owner's responsibility to make sure their animals are in a safe secure enclosure.

Shooting the dog will just lead to futher problems. Again I suggest the poultry owner leave some ghastly dead animal for the dogs to roll in. Even the fanciest dog cannot resist this temptation.

After a few instances coming home very smelly, they will contain the animal.

Funny...

At one point, I thought about feeding the neighbor's visting dog a nice batch of raw spicy sausage. Since it sleeps indoors, the happy dog could then knock the neighbors dead with a noxious cloud of flatulence. A four legged bomb that they invite into their home! I called it a 'Dog Bomb'.

And now you have expanded the 'Dog Bomb' theory. Thank you!
