Chicks, I am a property manager and I BEG my tenants to tell me when stuff like this starts happening. these are not great people you are dealing with. I'd almost bet you money that they are not great tenants, either. I know tenants like this and he may be looking for an excuse to get rid of them. (I would be)

I don't know what the laws are in your neck of the woods, but in my state, coming over in someone's yard without permission is trespassing.

As an example, my mom has a neighbor she hates (she's actually related to her, too, but that's another story.) So the FedEx truck brings my mom a package while no one's home and the neighbor comes over and signs for it. Mom finds out when she gets home. Mom called the sheriff and told them she didn't want that woman in her yard. The sheriff told her they were trespassing and she could file charges if she wanted and offered to come over and talk to the neighbor right then.

I'm not saying you need to file charges against them for anything. (You probably could, but you don't seem inclined to. But isn't panhandling illegal in some places?) But if you told your landlord, and they are crappy tenants anyway, them trespassing and disturbing the neighbors and making a nuisance of themselves might be just the ticket he needs to get rid of them. He ought to know. I mean, it's this type of folks that are always late on the rent and they always trash the house while they are living there. I have to evict people for this kind of garbage at least two or three times a year. I'm always happy to be rid of them.

wow! i am feeling so grateful for my neighbors right now!
this sounds like a horrible situation.
i have had "friends" like that in the PAST - and i've found that the more you give the more they take and in the end they end up resenting you for not giving more!
i think "one time" instances are normal and fine and neighborly (sometimes emergencies warrant such things) but when someone makes a habit of using other people for money etc. then they are taking advantage.
it's pretty icky that she sent her kids over today to do it. they will grow up thinking that this behavior is acceptable.
i hope you and your DH find a solution that makes you feel comfortable and happy.

I had neighbors similar to yours. The mother was a meth addict and a prostatue. She would send her kids over to borrow, whatever. I, personally would call the cops to question your neighbors. The kids may be baiting you for money for their own gain, as well. Do they own or rent the property? If they rent I would contact the land lord. I would not put up with it.

As soon as she turned down your offer to do yard work for extra cash, that right there should tell you she is up to no good.

I know a few folks who are unemployed and having tough times right now, and when I offer them odd jobs like "chicken sitter" or "landscaping help," they jump on it and do a good job, too.

Sheesh, I have no problem with lending a neighbor a cup of sugar, but what you are dealing with is just nonsense. Agree with other posters, your landlord should make HER move, since she's the one being a pain.

You actually should be glad that she didn't take you up on your offer of work for money. It wouldn't surprise me with what you have told us if while she was working, ohno!! she got hurt(of course on ACCIDENT) She would be the type that would sue you for everything you and DH have worked so very hard for. Don't let them in your yard.
I had neighbors whose two boys would climb on the rooves and tear off the shingles and throw them like frisbees, they would tear up trees and gardens, bash apart shopping carts, you get the idea. Our landlord told us(they had the same one) that they couldn't do anything about it.I was Pi**ed! we had lived there for several years with no problems, they had lived there for about three at the time with many complaints. I was told that they couldn't do anything unless I took a picture of them doing something destructive! So in addition to taking care of my three children , babysitting, and all the work that comes with a house and garden and family, I was supposed to peek out my windows all day and try to catch them in the act! When I finally did, the landlord , or course, did NOTHING!!

I'd tell her "Sorry, Honey, but I have decided that this year, I am not funding subsidizing anyone's crack/alcohol/prescription drug habits. Nor am I donating to the Feed Your Neighbors Lazy, Unemployed Boyfriend Fund. But I DO support the local Sheriff's Dept and The Fraternal Order of Police and (HERE'S the kicker) The local Department of Child Services. By the way, do you want me to tell DCS that you have a couple of kids that are just great at asking for donations, in case they need volunteers?"
