Neighbors to close for comfort

Thank you for clearing that up my husband and and myself have worked too hard for this place to just give it up and move. When we first were dating about 23 years ago; we took a drive in this area and he showed me this home when at the time it had weeds up to my shoulders and rotting porches and holiday decorations of all kinds in the yard. Plus he showed me another home as well and he said these were his dream homes. I told him that either one would be fine but I had two request 1) we had running water and 2) there was a toliet and believe you me that is about all we had when we moved in with 2 small children in 1996. So We are not going to give up this place without a fight.

I agree with what some of you have said. I personally love the smell of cow manure. I know, weird, but I grew up surrounded by dairies. Its terrible that they keep building the houses, because no one can afford them! Im going to be 18 this year, and it worries me that by the time Im able to afford a house and start a family, there wont be any country left for me! If that's the case, Im buying a few hundreds houses and crushing them all.

Good Luck with your problems, I hope it works out for you.

Have any of you checked with your local county clerks office as to when they have tax lien sales?

My daughter and I went to the one in her county (which will be my county when I move), this past October. We really didn't know what to expect, but were curious.

We couldn't believe it. The 5 acres right next to her, which will be caddy corner across the little dirt road from me, was listed. She had no idea. It has a little bitty house and a mobile home on it, but I was really only interested in the land. So I grabbed it. Deal is, at the sale I paid their late 2006 taxes plus penalties. This month, I paid their 2007 late taxes and penalties. At any time, they can catch up and pay me back, plus 8%. If they don't, next January I would pay their late 2008 taxes. And in June of 2009, if they're not caught up, it's mine.

May sound cold hearted, but if someone didn't pick up the tax certificate on it (me), the land just goes to the county. Better me than them.

Anyway... the best way to protect your property is to own more of it. Might be worth checking with any county you're interested in. Each county runs it by their own rules.

If I do get the deed in June 2009, my daughter and I are thinking dairy goats and making cheese, soap etc.

Just thought I'd throw that out there. If I'd known about this I'd have been buying country land years ago. I think this will be an annual thing for my daughter and I from now on.

This place is occupied by renters and the owner lives out of state. I'll end up owning the land and only paying 3 years taxes for it (if they don't catch up).

we're wondering about the two houses next door to us, both are abandoned/foreclosed or something, just empty and looks like they have been for awhile. each lot is the same as ours one acre laid out like a football field and all overgrown. I could care less about the doublewides on them...I want the property.

I may have to go on the county database and see exactly whop owns them and how much is owed in back taxes. 2 more acres would rock!

gotta love this, I was nosing around teh property appraisers website and I looked up our place..
Taxable Value $39,767

and the land value on the other 2 lots is $35k each ...but the building values are each between $75-100k

Hope that works out for you Quadcam, and if they aren't in foreclosure, maybe you can buy directly from the owners. If they are in foreclosure you might can get them dirt cheap and sell off the mobile homes on them to help with your costs...get a broker working on it for you and good luck

this is great advice.
a few years ago i had to file some paperwork down at town hall and when i told the lady where i lived she laughed and said something to the affect of "so you're the ones Ryan has been complaining about!"
turned out my "friendly" neighbor had been down there 4-5 times complaining about something we were doing.

i was pretty steamed, but after calming down i walked over and asked him politely but point blank if there was a problem.

we had a chat and since then the ladies at town hall tell me they haven't seen him.

they put their house up for sale a few months ago and we did the happy dance. unfortunately with the housing market the way it is they now can't afford to sell their mcmansion, but i still smile every time i see that real estate sign at the end of his driveway.
