Nervous chickens

Over the last week or so, my 12-week old chickens have become Nervous Nellies. Today they wouldn't freerange because something was spooking them -- I think my neighbor's chainsaw. They stayed in the coop while my rooster paced around saying buh-KAWK!

But the other day they wouldn't go more than a couple yards from the henhouse, and I had no clue why. When a cat so much as walks by the run, they go hide inside.

Are they going to grow out of this, or is this why they call them "chicken"?

Hmmmmmm... has there been a hawk around?
One of my chickens almost got killed by a hawk and wouldn't come out for days.
Well I don't know for sure if she almost got killed, but she HAD dug herself in a pit under a bush and acted real scared like.

I haven't seen any hawks recently, but I know they've been around in the past. Maybe they finally figured out that my chicks spend a couple of hours outside...

I'd better keep an eye out, I guess.

We saw one on our garage roof yesterday.
And we're in the middle of the city!
