Nest box and layer question

I have a hen that started laying 3 days now. I have hemp inside the coop and nesting boxes. Not sure if it is enough material. I was wondering if anyone uses the rubber washable pads or the straw like ones? Think my girl is pecking at her egg trying to figure out what it is but I also want to be sure that the material I am using is good or if I should use something different. Should I make my nesting boxes darker and more private? Pictures for reference including the culprit layer! TIA

Easy free nest padding - fold up empty feed sacks to fit the bottom of the nest box, then top with the nesting material of your choice. It'll help prevent cracking/breakage in normal shelled eggs, in case that's contributing to her pecking at the eggs.
