Hi, we have 8 red sex link hens that we believed to be 3 weeks old at easter this year. Knowing that hens lay at 5-6 months I haven't prepped the nest boxes with materials. I wanted to get it clean (well cleaner) beforethey started laying. Well this morning I had a suprise! Our first egg!!!! And another was about to lay but I interrupted her. My concern is, neither egg was in a nest box. One was in the shavings on the floor and the other was on a flat spot that was set up for them to roost on. What can I do to encourage nesting in the boxes?

! Pleased you joined our community! One way is to put fake eggs (some folks use gold balls or wooden "eggs") in the nesting box to encourage them. You can also narrow their roosting flat spot to be just a roost pole. You can also type "won't lay in nest box" or similar words, into the BYC search box - lots of threads have been devoted to this topic. Good luck to you!
