Actually Matt, I like cats. I have 4 or 5 around here.

I find they are very handy for polisihing your head, as can be seen to the left. And of course, as everyone knows, they are delightful sauteed in olive oil with mushrooms and shallots, accompanied by a nice Pinot Grigio.

I like Merlot, too, but consider this popular slogan:

I've got some carpet off-cuts which I imagine are nylon - had though maybe best not to use incase the hens decide to eat it. Should I use it?

Yes. It will get funked up pretty readily, I would think, but you can use it. I still say good old fashioned hay, fine leaves, shavings, etc. are your best bet. Only if you are using a roll away design would I recommend using carpet alone.

Heres a little tidbit which may interest you.

Egg-eating Prevention Practices include:

- Reducing Traffic in the Nesting Area.
Egg breakage is a major reason why hens start eating eggs. Excessive traffic in the nesting area increases the chance of egg breakage. Some precautions which can be taken include:

a) Provide one 12" x 12" nest for every 4-5 hens in your flock. Never have less than 6 nesting boxes. Always locate the nests at least 2 feet off the ground and at least four feet away from the roosts. b) Keep 2 inches of clean, dry nesting material in the nests at all times. Many eggs are cracked due to a lack of protective padding in nesting boxes.
c) Remove all broody hens from the nesting area. Broody hens reduce nesting space and cause more traffic in the remaining nests.​
