Nest box or… Stealing ideas here

If you are able to get your hands on it, this is what I'd do: Cut it in half, so that you have 2 units that can be hooked together. It wouldn't be as top heavy, though if you did not cut it, you could always screw it to the wall. I'd also put something on the sides to give more privacy.

One thought that I have is to use old wooden drawers. They could easily be mounted between the studs in a coop to provide extra nest boxes. I envision making key hole slots on the side of the drawer so the drawer could be dropped into place, and removed later if flock size decreases. (does that ever happen?)

Great ideas!

(does that ever happen?)

Not voluntarily! ;)

It might take some pretty nifty flying skills to get to the cider vinegar and sea salt “box” without banging their heads on the cheese and onion “box” , I would imagine

I browse the furniture section of Craigslist for chickens........ saw a nice wooden shoe organizer that would make an awesome nesting box, for only like $20. And also old entertainment centers makes good nesting boxes with leftover wood to use for other things as well.

I walked away from an awesome oak kitchen cabinet that I saw at the dump the last time we were there. At the time, I couldn't justify bringing home yet one more treasure that I didn't have an immediate need for. All it needed was a single shelf in the middle to turn it into 2 perfectly proportioned nest boxes. Wish I'd brought it home, b/c several days later, I moved 2 hens out of the main coop and into the old coop which needs nest boxes!

This was some shelves that I converted over for a brooder.

It has possibilities. I think you are right, the front lip is probably too low but that can be fixed.

Some thoughts as far as using that or building one. Ar the nests a convenient height for you? Not too low or too high? How high are the roosts compared to the top of that?

I could see using the studs if the spacing is close to set the width and use as wall supports. Build and attach your levels, then use a solid piece of plywood for the sides, no gaps. Should be extremely easy to build and give cozy nests.
