Nest box padding?

I thought I was being nice and went and bought a small bale of straw to put in the boxes, but the chickens immediately kicked it all out. So the pine shaves are back in, but they move it around alot! My son went out to collect eggs, hours after I told him to, (I was out) and the chickens were pecking on one. Got a hole in it, don't know if it cracked in the box due to wood floor or if the girls did the deed themselves. But I am thinking some sort of padding might be good for the bottom...removable...as always, any suggestions?

My girls love the straw, they also move it around to get to snugggle in the right spot. I put shavings in one box and they do not even go int it.

They lay the eggs pretty much close to the ground and my girls also try to lay on solid ground. there is a nice hole they dig and lay right there. I had a tiny hole in one the other day, just eat that one first and don't worry about it.

Do you have something on the front of each hive that keeps the shavings or hay in the nestbox?? If you don't have a small 'lip' on the nestbox any material used will get kicked out. Dixie
