Nest Box Top opening or back opening

I have top opening. It's a PITA 'cause you need one hand to hold it open while you deal with what's inside with just one. Of course, you could add some sort of latch to hold it open. I haven't figured that out yet. NOT a handy person, as you could guess...

I used a short chunk of 2"x2" to hold my top-opening box open while I collected eggs. But water inflitration is why I changed style.

I hear ya! Thanks for the tip. Actually, I have a number of strategies I employ. But when I move and get a new coop and run built I will definitely switch too.

Another thing I'm going to do is try Ryguy's tip for painting the hardware cloth black. It sounds great but getting everyone out of the coop and run at the same time to make the modification now sounds like a headache I don't need.

I had my coop and run built when I had never had a chicken and didn't know what I was doing. I'm glad to say that those are really the only changes I'd make. Plus I'll have it all on one level if we're able to move to a spot with more space than we have here. But that's about it. I was very lucky!

I made the nest box with a back opening door. I will post all of my construction pictures when I finish as I keep getting held up by other things. Thanks for all recommendations.
