I am installing an exterior access nest box in my coop. Question, which is best for opening, the top opening or opening the back ?

I have top opening. It's a PITA 'cause you need one hand to hold it open while you deal with what's inside with just one. Of course, you could add some sort of latch to hold it open. I haven't figured that out yet. NOT a handy person, as you could guess...
Screw in an eyelet above your door into the coop. Put another eyelet in the door. Connect a short piece of chain between the two and use an S hook to hold it open.

Better back opening than top, IMO.
Then you don't have to weather proof a top hinge.
Make the top with large overhangs to protect the back access door.
...and adding chains on back door makes a shelf for your egg basket.
Mine are inside under cover, but....

The drop down like what @aart has, will be easier to use and you won't have to try to keep water from entering at the top hinge area. Just make sure there are no chickens in there that might jump out when you open it, unless you are ok with that.

Mine usually shoot out the front entrance, tho most are used to me peeking in back or front.
But, yeah, good to open back nest access slowly.
